  • “To Become A Developed Nation, We Must Implement New Education Policy”: Dharmendra Pradhan

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan attended a significant Letter of Intent (LOI) handover ceremony with the University of Liverpool, marking a milestone in fostering international academic collaborations.

Speaking at an event, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized India’s ambitious educational goals under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Pradhan highlighted the scale of India’s education system. He noted that India’s Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education currently stands at 26-27%, with the NEP aiming to raise it to 50% within the next five years.

“Today, the number of students in India is 300 million. Out of that, 40 million are in higher education… We have more than 1200 universities and 50,000 colleges… But GER (Gross Enrolment Ratio) is around 26-27%. The National Education Policy 2020 recommendation is to take it to 50% in the next 5 years,” he said.

Linking education to national development, the minister added, “Today, India is the 4th largest economy globally. We have a target given by PM Modi. By 2047, India will have to be a developed nation… If you want to have the ambition to be a developed nation, we have to implement the National Education Policy. One of the primary recommendations of the NEP… We have to look beyond the horizon. We have to become global. We can’t function in isolation…”

  • “Knowing More Languages Enhances Employability”: Education Minister

Countering the Opposition’s offensive against the three-language formula in the National Education Policy (NEP), Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has blamed “political positioning” by three states and stressed that NEP does not impose Hindi.

At NDTV’s Education Conclave, Mr Pradhan was asked about three states — Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal — opposing the three-language formula in NEP. “Three states have resorted to positioning due to political reasons. And the reasons for their opposition are different. Knowing more languages is not a bad thing. It enhances personality and employability,” he said.

“In Tamil Nadu schools, English, Urdu, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada are taught. Some schools also teach Hindi. So, what is the objection? Some people have a political grudge. Some emotive issues going back to the 1960s… the conditions were different, they have changed in 2025. NEP is not saying you are bound to study a particular language,” Mr Pradhan said.

On the MK Stalin government’s allegation that the Centre is blocking funds because Tamil Nadu has refused to accept the three-language formula, Mr Pradhan said, “Your opposition is political. You are depriving Tamil Nadu’s children of their rights. The administration is not a dharmashala, it works according to rules and the Constitution. You will say I will run a central-sponsored scheme, but won’t fulfill the conditions. This cannot happen.”

Mr Pradhan said Kerala’s Education Minister V Sivankutty met him recently. “He is my friend. I saw his statement after meeting him. But he told me something else.”

In Bengal, a CAG audit found that funds under PM-Poshan scheme were distributed among workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress, Mr Pradhan said. “PM Poshan funds were sent to provide food to children, you use it for party activities. Are the funds meant for your whimsical expenses? We do not harbour political animosity. Several non-BJP-ruled states are benefiting, Telangana, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh,” he said.

Slamming the Tamil Nadu government, he said, “We are not saying that Hindi has to be included in the three languages. You have to create an emotive issue, a north-south division, a Hindi-non Hindi polarisation.”

The National Education Policy pushes for a three-language formula from Class 6 onwards. The move, it says, is aimed at promoting multilingualism and regional languages. “The three-language formula will continue to be implemented while keeping in mind the Constitutional provisions, aspirations of the people, regions, and the Union, and the need to promote multilingualism as well as promote national unity. However, there will be a greater flexibility in the three-language formula, and no language will be imposed on any State,” the policy clarifies.

The DMK government, however, has alleged that the three-language formula attempts to push Hindi in the southern states and has batted for a two-language policy. The Centre has rejected these charges.

Kerala has maintained that while it is open to children learning more languages, no language must be imposed. West Bengal, on the other hand, brought in its own education policy in 2023 that has a three-language formula Class 5 onwards.

  • 6 Of Family Die Inside Car, 7th Sitting Outside Said “Will Die In 5 Mins”

Six members of a family, including three children, were found dead in a parked car in Panchkula last night. The seventh member, a man, was found sitting outside the car, claiming to die in next five minutes. Preliminary investigation suggests that the family was under heavy debt and had died together by suicide.

The car, parked outside a house, had raised suspicion among local residents. When, to their shock, they found the bodies inside the car, they rushed them to the hospital and informed the police.

On Monday night, Praveen Mittal, 42, and family were reportedly returning from an event in Panchkula to their home in Dehradun. They had attended a spiritual programme at the Bageshwar Dham. Late at night, the family allegedly consumed poison and died by suicide.

A local resident was on his night walk when he spotted a car, having Uttarakhand number plate, parked behind his car. A man, believed to be Praveen Mittal, was sitting by the car, on the pavement.

“What stood apart for us was a towel hanging from the car,” said a resident who spotted the vehicle. “I, and my brother, approached the man and asked him about his whereabouts. He said, the family was returning from Bageshwar Dham. Since they didn’t find any hotel, they decided to spend the night in the car. I asked him to move the car to the market area,” he added.

The man got up to move the car but the local was not convinced. He returned to the car and peeped inside and what he saw was horrifying – six dead bodies and a stinking car.

“I saw six people lying flat. They had vomited on each other. The car was stinking. I pulled the man away and asked what the matter was. He then informed that the family has died in a suicide pact and he will die too, in five minutes. The man claimed to be under huge debt,” the local resident recalled.

The family was rushed to the hospital but were declared dead. The man could be saved had the ambulance arrived on time, said the local.

The dead have been identified as Praveen Mittal, 42, his elderly parents, wife and three young children – two girls and a boy.

Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Himadri Kaushik and Deputy Commissioner of Police Law and Order Amit Dahiya were among police officers that reached the spot and began an investigation.

“We received information that six people have been brought to Ojas Hospital. When we reached there, we learnt they were declared dead,” said Himadri Kaushik.

“Another person was brought to the Civil Hospital, Sector 6. He has also been declared dead. Some facts make it clear it is a case of suicide. We are collecting scientific evidence to assess the matter,” she added.

The police have found a suicide note, the details of which are yet to be disclosed. It is believed that the family was under heavy debt and a financial crisis.

The bodies have been sent to the mortuary of a private hospital.

  • Dharmendra Pradhan’s “Crocodile Tears” Jibe At Rahul Gandhi

Reiterating his party’s charge that the Congress indulges in feudal politics, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched a scathing jibe at Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi today, accusing him of shedding “crocodile tears” on issues of social justice.

His comment came to a question on the caste census, a long-standing demand by the Congress that has now been adopted by the BJP-led central government. Being seen as a political masterstroke, the caste survey announcement had drawn another rider from Congress, with Mr Gandhi demanding the removal of the 50% cap on reservation.

Speaking at NDTV Education Conclave, Mr Pradhan said Mr Gandhi’s views reflect his ignorance, given that he belongs to a party that has historically stood against matters of social justice. “Some shed crocodile tears as a political strategy. Their statements reflect their ignorance and arrogance. In this country’s public domain, one family that outspokenly stood against social justice is the Gandhi family,” said Mr Pradhan.

The Congress defeated BR Ambedkar, the father of India’s Constitution, in elections, opposed proactive and affirmative action in the constituent assembly, and refused to make the reports of the Tata Kalelkar Commission and the Mandal Commission public for a long time, he said, listing incidents when the party stood against social justice.
